Water Supply & Sanitation (GW) Division, Muktsar is maintaining the water supply and sewerage scheme Muktsar Town. Muktsar is one of the Historical Town of Punjab. The water supply & sewerage system of Muktsar is being maintained by our department from the year 1971. The population of this Town as per year 2001 censes is 83655 persons. Water supply to this Town is based on Canal water & is in existence for the last 80 year i.e. from the year 1925. Presently the existing filtration capacity of rapid sand filtration plant is 3.1 MGD; which is insufficient for whole of the city. The existing water supply system is quite old and needs augmentation keeping in view the growing needs of the Town.

The Principal Secretary to Govt. of Punjab Department of Water Supply & Sanitation has directed the department to frame an estimate for Augmentation of water supply Muktsar Town. Accordingly the estimate of this work is being prepared. As per Govt. of India Norms, the water supply scheme is to be designed for 30 years period keeping in view the prospective population after 30 years i.e., in the year 2035; the water supply requirement of Muktsar town would be 8 MGD or 36.32 MLD. The existing capacity of water supply is 3.1 MGD thus leaving a short fall of 5 MGD. Keeping in view the topography of the town this 5 MGD capacity would be provided at two places; 2 MGD at the existing water works on Kotkapura road and 3 MGD across the Railway Line. Land requirement to accommodate different structures i.e. S&S Tank, rapid sand filtration plant, pumping machinery and OHSR of desired capacity is 10.6 acres. The land for the construction of these structures has to be purchased and provision as per market rate is being made in the estimate. The water supply distribution system is quite old. The present laid length of water supply pipes is 76 Kms. For making the distribution system fit for the augmented water supply 49 Kms. New pipe line of different sizes has to be laid which would include 15 Km. of new pipe line & 34 Km. of pipe line replacement.
